Bremen hosted Pioneer on Wednesday and honored its 8 seniors before and after the game. The group responded with a 13-4 victory over the Panthers, moving to 16-6 on the season, with two games remaining before sectionals. Senior Maddux Hickman started for Bremen and only allowed one earned run over four innings while striking out four. Senior outfielders Corban Van Vuren and Braeden Corwin combined for six RBI in the game. The Lions will host Rochester on Thursday in their final home game of the regular season. The teams played to a scoreless first inning, with Pioneer then taking the lead on a two-out wild pitch in the second. A line drive double play ended a potential Bremen rally in the bottom of the inning. In the third inning, Senior C Zack Rouch reached on an error, courtesy runner Jace Pippenger stole second, and SS Aiden Alvarado singled him home with two outs to even the game at one. Pioneer got a two out RBI of their own in the fourth, but Hickman got out of the jam, limiting the damage to just one run. In the bottom half, CF Corban Van Vuren came in on a sac fly by 1B Landon Bates to tie it back up and get Hickman off the hook. Sophomore Cole Mason took the ball in the fifth and recorded a clutch 1-2-3 inning against the top of the Panther order, striking out the first two hitters and getting Bremen back up to bat. The Lions rewarded his effort - Rouch walked, LF Zack Buszkiewicz singled, and Alvarado re-entered, shooting a ball down the left field line to give the Lions a 3-2 lead. After an error plated another, Van Vuren singled to right to make it 5-2. Another error and a walk set up a bases loaded situation for senior RF Braeden Corwin. He ripped a two-run, two-strike hit to left field to break it open for the Lions at 7-2. Pioneer answered back in the top of the 6th, however, scoring two on a string of base hits. Rouch cut down a would-be base stealer and RP Casey Ton struck out the next batter to minimze the damage. Rouch and Buszkiewicz walked to lead off the bottom of the sixth, then Alvarado loaded the bases with a bunt. After senior 3B Max Barnes was hit by a pitch, the Lions rallied. Van Vuren singled home two, Bates scored one on an infield single, Ton walked to score another, Corwin was hit by a pitch to make it 12-4, and RF Jack Wildauer's sac fly pushed it to 13-4. Ton then worked a scoreless top of the seventh to close out the win for Bremen. Congrats to the senior class on the team win and the success they've had so far this season. Thank you to all the parents who participated in the senior night festivities and made it a memorable experience for the players. A huge note of appreciation to those who helped coordinate gift baskets, flowers, pictures, and organizing - What a 'good town' it really is!
