Makenzie Shumaker traveled Thursday night down to Indianapolis to participate in the 2nd Annual IHSAA Girls State Wrestling Finals that took place Friday. This was Makenzie's 3rd time appearing at State. She qualified one year prior to IHSAA sanctioning. Shumaker started round one wrestling against a Muncie Central opponent. Makenzie won this match by fall. This put Makenzie in the Top 8. Her quarterfinals match was against a tough Faith Christian girl. This match was back and forth. Makenzie looked to score a last second takedown before time ran out. The point got waived off. She went in to overtime, all she has to do was score a takedown. Nobody scored in the first one minute overtime. Makenzie then went into two 30 second periods where neither wrestler scored. This comes down to the ultimate tie breaker. Makenzie had choose due to scoring the first point in the match. Makenzie held her opponent down and didn't allow the Faith Christian girl to escape. Makenzie won the match. This now advanced her to the Semifinals. Makenzie would face a solid multi-time state runner-up in a Franklin Community girl where she came up short. With this loss, it bumped Makenzie down to the third place match. For third place, Makenzie would have a rematch with the Crown Point girl that beat her a week ago at Regionals. Makenzie ultimately dropped this match finishing her High School wrestling Career with a 4th place finish in the state. Makenzie has had a huge role in the success the Bremen Wrestling Girls program has had. She completed an outstanding career with 99 wins 3 sectional titles, a regional title, and 2 state metals (4th place, 8th place). The Bremen Wrestling Coaching Staff is proud of the season/career she had. We also want to wish her the best of luck as she plans to continue her academic and athletic career at Manchester University.
